FREDERICTON (GNB) – Olivia and William were the most popular names for babies born in New Brunswick in 2019.

Preliminary results released by the Vital Statistics Office at Service New Brunswick show that 5,355 children were born in the province in 2019 – 2,603 girls and 2,752 boys. In 2018 there were 2,812 males and 2,636 females.

“I congratulate all the new parents,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Sherry Wilson. “Babies are a wonderful reminder that what we do today has consequences for the kind of province we are leaving behind for our children and grandchildren. It is important that we all work together to ensure a strong New Brunswick for future generations.”

In 2019 there were 984 different names given to boys and 1,224 different names given to girls, compared to 974 different names given to boys and 1,191 different names given to girls in 2018.

Olivia and Emma remained the two most popular girl names for the third year in a row, followed by Charlotte, Amelia, Ava, Evelyn, Chloe, Scarlett, Violet, Sophia, Emily and Madison.

The most popular names for boys in 2019 are William, Liam, Noah, Logan, Benjamin, Jacob, Jack, Thomas, Owen, Lucas, Oliver and Jackson.
