EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The provincial government announced today that Edmundston will be the location for one of four government-operated contact centres.

The existing 74 contact centres across the province will be amalgamated into four regional business centres, leading to an expected savings of about $12.9 million over five years. The consolidation is expected to provide better service and achieve better value for taxpayers.

“We are listening to New Brunswickers and know they want a more efficient government focused on the economy,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Consolidating the contact centres will allow us to better invest in New Brunswickers’ priorities of economic growth, education and health care.”

Today, each of the contact centres operates independently, has different service levels, has a different approach to call handling, and uses different tools. Through the consolidation project, employees in the four business centres will be trained to have a broader knowledge of government programs and services.

“Training of employees will be enhanced to provide better services to New Brunswickers,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty. “We will be investing in innovation and technology, and will be improving services along the way.”

Edmundston’s business centre will be home to part of Service New Brunswick’s technical HelpDesk and the regional 911 centre. Government employees working from this location will serve the public and their clients seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The project is part of a broader exercise under Strategic Program Review designed to reshape the civil service by using human resources more effectively.
